International Museum Day on Sunday, May 18

Free admission to museums and archaeological sites

With the theme The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities museums across Greece will celebrate International Museum Day, as they do every year, on May 18. According to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), in today’s world of continuous social transformation, our understanding of the world has evolved. Museums are redefining their roles, creating new ways to function and communicate with the public.

By choosing this theme, ICOM invites us to envision new approaches to preserving and deepening our cultural identity, reinforcing the role of museums as vital social pillars of development.

This year’s celebration of International Museum Day will focus on the following topics:

  • Intangible Cultural Heritage:
Museums play a crucial role in promoting intangible heritage as a dynamic source of inspiration, revitalizing communities, and strengthening social bonds.

  • Empowering Youth:
Museums are seeking innovative ways to collaborate with and engage young people, aiming to understand the emerging world and promote collective development.

  • New Technologies:
Museums are encouraged to leverage modern technology to create new forms of expression, enhance public engagement, and improve visitor experiences through the development of smart and user-friendly applications. Additionally, they have the opportunity to adapt their operations to meet evolving needs.

The Greek branch of ICOM has chosen the Herakleidon Museum as the honored museum for 2025, as it combines science with art, historical perspective with innovation, offering knowledge and entertainment that appeals to all ages.

On International Museum Day, admission will be free to museums and archaeological sites. Many museums and other cultural institutions will also host educational programs and various events, not only on the day itself but also around the date.
