The Santorini Experience, the island’s beloved sports tourism event, is making a powerful comeback for its 8th edition on October 10-12, 2025. The event is expected once again to attract athletes from all over the world, offering unforgettable sports experiences set against the breathtaking backdrop of Santorini.
A highlight of the program is the iconic open water swimming race, a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) course where athletes will dive into the deep blue Aegean from the Volcano and finish at the Old Port of Fira. The course crosses waters with depths reaching up to 400 meters in the center of the caldera, offering a dramatic swimming experience with Santorini’s volcanic landscape as the backdrop. The race is designed by Nikos Gemelos, one of Greece’s top swimming coaches with Olympic and world-level accolades. Participants’ safety is ensured by a team of professional lifeguards, rescue boats, and mandatory safety buoys worn by all swimmers. All registered swimmers are entitled to free use of the cable car (both ascent and descent) upon presenting proof of registration.
The unique scenery of Santorini, from its narrow alleys to its majestic caldera and volcanic terrain, will also host a series of trail running races, offering runners a thrilling experience. Participants can choose among three trail routes tailored to different skill levels. Runners will pass through iconic locations such as Imerovigli, Firostefani, and Oia, enjoying panoramic views of the caldera and the volcano. The races include a 5 km route suitable for power walking and running, a 10 km route for more experienced runners, and a 15 km route for endurance lovers. All races start and finish at the Oia desalination plant, with sections of the route passing through scenic dirt trails.
The multi-award-winning event welcomes both professional and amateur athletes, providing a high-standard sports experience with excellent organization, strict safety measures, and authentic moments of sportsmanship, all within the enchanting landscape of Santorini.
Proving its international appeal and strong presence on the global sports tourism map, last year’s Santorini Experience attracted participants from 35 countries.
