The exhibition Visitations by Yannis Chatziaslanis offers a fascinating photographic journey through museums. Captured over five years during visits to more than 50 museums, these images, shot with a small analog camera, depict exhibition halls, showcases, objects, and artifacts.
This is not a museum guide. Instead, Visitations becomes its own imaginary museum, a collection of collections. The project began from a desire to explore how museums tell stories, a curiosity about the exhibits themselves, and the unexpected experiences each visit can bring.
Chatziaslanis focuses on how things are classified and represented. His photos connect unrelated spaces and objects, creating new narratives and meanings. The real blends with the imagined, sparking memories, imagination, and new interpretations.
The exhibition is presented in two ways:
• as a large mosaic of photographs, forming an open archive reminiscent of a personal collection
• through 27 smaller photographic fragments, created during the pandemic
Together, these parts strike a balance between order and chaos, encouraging visitors to explore, connect, and reimagine their own version of a museum.
Visitations will be on display at the Kastelana Photography Centre, at the entrance of the Kastelli in Pyrgos, Santorini.
