This Week by The Greek Self: How to Make the Perfect Frappe

In Greece, coffee isn’t just a way to wake up—it’s a ritual, a reason to pause, to chat, to enjoy the moment. And when the weather gets warm, there’s no drink more iconic than the frappé. Born by accident in Thessaloniki in the 1950s, this frothy, chilled instant coffee became a national favorite almost overnight. It’s simple, refreshing, and unmistakably Greek.

Whether you’re relaxing on a sunny balcony, taking a break from work, or dreaming of your next island holiday, a frappé brings a little bit of that laid-back Greek lifestyle into your day.

 What You’ll Need:

  • 2 teaspoons (about 4g) NESCAFÉ® Classic

  • Sugar (optional – to taste)

  • 30ml of room temperature water

  • 4–5 ice cubes

  • Cold water (to fill the glass)

  • Milk (optional, according to taste)

  • A shaker or a handheld frother

Instructions:

  1. Start with the basics
    In a shaker or tall glass, add 2 teaspoons of NESCAFÉ® Classic and sugar if you like it sweet (try 1 teaspoon for “metrios”/medium or 2 for “glykos”/sweet).

  2. Add water
    Pour in about 30ml of room temperature water – just enough to mix with the coffee and sugar.

  3. Shake it up!
    Shake the mixture vigorously for about 10 – 15 seconds until a thick foam forms. If you’re using a frother, mix in the same glass until you get that creamy top layer.

  4. Add ice
    Drop in 4 – 5 ice cubes to cool it down instantly.

  5. Top it off
    Fill the glass with cold water to the top. Add a splash of milk if you like your frappé a bit creamier.

  6. Stir gently
    Give it a light stir to mix everything without disturbing the foam too much.

Tips from Frappé Coffee Lovers:

  • Always shake or froth before adding the ice and extra water.

  • Pour cold water slowly from the side of the glass to preserve the foam.

  • For a more traditional touch, try it with evaporated milk.

  • Want it stronger? Use slightly less water or an extra half teaspoon of coffee.
