On Sunday evening, September 21st, the Santorini caldera once again became the stage for one of the island’s most iconic cultural events, the annual Volcanoes. Since 1991, this celebration has honored Santorini’s volcanic history and its deep connection to the island’s identity, attracting both locals and visitors for a night of awe and emotion.
As the sun set, the skies over Nea Kameni lit up with dazzling colors and shapes in a breathtaking reenactment of the great volcanic eruption. But this year’s Volcanoes introduced something truly new: for the first time, the program featured a spectacular drone show, adding a modern touch to the beloved tradition.
For ten minutes, perfectly synchronized drones danced across the night sky, creating luminous images inspired by Santorini’s birth, its archaeological treasures, and its local products. Among the highlights were glowing messages that filled the horizon, including “Santorini the One”, which drew loud applause from the crowd.
The evening reached its peak with the traditional fireworks display, a mesmerizing burst of light and sound that transformed the night into day, evoking the explosive force of the volcano and leaving unforgettable memories for all who watched.
With favorable weather finally on their side, after strong winds had postponed the event by a day, organizers ensured every detail unfolded flawlessly. In its announcement, Geothira S.A. expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s celebration and promised to return with an even more impressive experience in the years ahead.
Mark your calendars: according to the Municipality of Thira’s schedule, Volcanoes 2026 will take place on Saturday, September 19th, 2026.
