Santorini is arguably the most photogenic island on earth, meaning filmmakers have spent decades trying to capture its dramatic caldera, volcanic cliffs, and stark white architecture on celluloid.

However, its extreme fame has created a strange cinematic phenomenon: people tend to assume every movie featuring a blue church dome or a sun-drenched cliff side was shot here. As a local expert, I am here to separate the true celluloid history from the purely mythical, keeping things strictly factual.

The Real Deal: Moveis Actually Filmed in Santorini

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)

The high-octane opening sequence features Angelina Jolie jet-skiing across the caldera and discovering a sunken temple. The production actually filmed on location in Oia, and local authorities remarkably welcomed the crew with open arms, a rare feat given how protective Greece is over its archaeological landscapes.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005) & Sequel (2008)

When the character Lena goes to visit her grandparents, she lands straight in a postcard. The sweeping village scenes were shot extensively across Oia and Amoudi Bay. If you visit Amoudi today, you can easily trace the steep steps the girls rode donkeys up in the film.

Summer Lovers (1982)

This 80s romance starring Peter Gallagher and Daryl Hannah is essentially a 98-minute tourism ad for the island. It was filmed directly in Oia and Akrotiri, featuring a soundtrack by The Pointer Sisters. Fun fact: the villa the characters stay in was bought by a local family and still stands as a marker of the island’s early Hollywood era.

Bang Bang! (2014)

This massive Bollywood action thriller, starring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, features a highly stylized, ultra-popular musical sequence for the song “Meherbaan”. The entire sequence was shot across the winding, blindingly white pathways of Oia, sparking a massive wave of Indian tourism to the island.

Che ne sarà di noi (What Will Happen to Us) (2004)

A lighter, lesser-known Italian coming-of-age comedy that follows three young Italian high school graduates who chase a girl all the way to Santorini. The film captures a much raw, less chaotic side of the island’s summer nightlife and open roads.

For the First Time (2008)

This Filipino romantic drama stars Richard Gutierrez and KC Concepcion as a playboy and a prude falling in love. The production utilized the dramatic backdrop of Fira and the sunset views of Imerovigli to highlight the emotional friction between the characters.

D’Agostino (2011)

A deeply weird, cult sci-fi psychological thriller directed by Jorge Ameer. It follows a depressed London businessman who clones a friend while living in a secluded villa overlooking the caldera. It features endless, eerie shots of the cliffs, local donkeys, and quiet village alleys.

 

The Mythical Misfits: Set in Greece, But Not Santorini

Mamma Mia! (2008)

This is the ultimate cinematic misconception. Thousands of tourists arrive in Santorini every year hunting for the “Mamma Mia church.” In reality, the fictional island of Kalokairi was filmed hundreds of miles away in the lush, pine-heavy Sporades islands, specifically Skopelos and Skiathos islands. Santorini’s dry, volcanic landscape looks nothing like the green cliffs seen in the movie.

The Big Blue (Le Grand Bleu) (1988)

Luc Besson’s classic deep-diving masterpiece captures the absolute essence of the endless blue Aegean. Because Santorini is famous for deep drop-offs, people frequently lump it into the shooting history. However, the sweeping, rugged coastlines in the movie belong to the nearby, far more traditional islands of Amorgos and Ios.

Before Midnight (2013)

The third chapter of Richard Linklater’s acclaimed romance trilogy takes Jesse and Celine to Greece. Because their deep, philosophical conversations happen against old stone walls, historic ruins, and romantic coastal backdrops, tourists frequently assume they are walking through Santorini’s traditional villages. The entire production was actually set and filmed in the historic Mani region of the southern Peloponnese mainland.
