The countdown has officially begun for the 12th edition of Santorini Experience, scheduled to take place from October 16 to 18, 2026. Jointly organized by the Municipality of Thira, its Department of Sports and Culture, and ActiveMedia Group, under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and the Greek National Tourism Organization, this premier sports tourism gathering brings trail runners, open sea swimmers, and international sports icons to the volcanic island.

This edition balances high competitive standards with grassroots community engagement, expanding its scope beyond seasoned competitors to include educational school visits, pet friendly running tracks, and free participation for local residents.

Expanding Horizons: Fresh Routes in Kamari and Oia

While the signature events retain their places on the schedule, the 2026 program introduces new terrain for runners and walkers alike.

  • Friday, October 16 (Kamari): The event opens on Friday afternoon with a brand new 5 kilometer circular route set beneath the shadow of Ancient Thira. Designed to accommodate both competitive runners and leisure walkers, this course also hosts the inaugural “Pet Run”, a non competitive 5 km stretch allowing participants to run alongside their dogs.

  • Saturday, October 17 (Caldera Swimming): Swimmers will take to the water on Saturday morning for the iconic 2.4 kilometer open sea swim. The course starts directly from the volcanic islet of Volcano (Nea Kameni) and crosses the deep waters of the Caldera to finish at the historic Old Port of Fira.

  • Sunday, October 18 (Oia Trail Runs): The athletic weekend culminates on Sunday with trail running distances of 5 km, 10 km, and 15 km. Starting and ending at the desalination plant in Oia, these routes test endurance across uneven coastal paths and elevation shifts typical of the caldera edge.

World-Class Talent Meets Local Engagement

The 2026 roster features an impressive assembly of Olymp

ic medalists and European champions. In the open water swimming category, Hungary’s David Betlehem, bronze medalist in the 10 km open water event at the Paris Olympics, joins fellow countrywoman Bettina Fábián, French European champion Caroline Laure Jouisse, and Japanese Olympian Yasu Fukuoka. Additional international competitors include Leonie Beck, Barbara Pozzobon, Anna Greta Olasz, Mario Sanzullo, and Marcel Schouten, alongside Greek national champion swimmers Georgia Damasioti and Nikol Pavlopoulou.

Track and field stars are also participating across the weekend, including Greek Olympian and European champion hurdler Periklis Iakovakis, as well as Greek-American ultramarathon runner Dean Karnazes.

Local involvement remains a core priority of the event structure. Residents of the Municipality of Thira receive complimentary registration across all races, with local sign ups hosted at the Alafouzos Sport store in Fira.

School Outreach and Community Programs

Ahead of the athletic competition, an educational initiative takes place on October 15 and 16 at the Bellonio Cultural Center in Fira for local primary, middle, and high school students.

These interactive sessions focus on character development, inclusion, and safety:

  • Dimitris Papanikolaou, Olympic basketball player and European champion, leads discussions on diversity and social inclusion.

  • Thanasis Chountras, motorsport coach, addresses road safety and proper driving behavior.

  • Elina Tzengko (European javelin champion) and Antigoni Ntrismpioti (European race walking champion) share personal accounts of athletic discipline, perseverance, and high level competition.

By pairing elite athletic participation with educational programming and accessible new routes, Santorini Experience 2026 reinforces how island destinations can curate sustainable sports tourism that engages both visitors and the resident community.
