A Story in Santorini: A Book for All Ages

Illustrated Greek children’s book cover featuring donkey and cat in Santorini

Santorini has inspired countless stories, images, and journeys. Now, it serves as the backdrop for a new children’s story in the book “A Story in Santorini”, written by Sarah Alzalki Vrioni and illustrated by Vivi Markatou.

Written in both English and Greek, this bilingual book combines storytelling with an introduction to the island for young readers. Through rhyming verse, vivid illustrations, and a heartwarming plot, Santorini is portrayed through its landscape, history, and culture, alongside values such as friendship, love, and acceptance.

Within its pages, a little cat and a small donkey meet and embark on an adventure among the sea, volcanic paths, whitewashed alleyways, and iconic island sunsets. Their meeting sparks a journey of discovery and a tender narrative about viewing the world and those around us with an open heart.

Vivi Markatou’s illustrations capture the distinct imagery of Santorini, translating the island’s landscape and atmosphere directly onto the page. At the back of the book, young readers will also find coloring pages to continue their own creative exploration.

The author, Sarah Alzalki Vrioni, is of Greek-Syrian origin and studied Architecture and Photography in England, where she lived for several years. Her travels and exposure to different cultures have shaped the way she views and narrates stories.

She currently resides in Santorini with her family. Motherhood inspired a new creative path for her, leading to the creation of children’s stories rooted in everyday life, imagination, and a love for children.

“A Story in Santorini” is her latest book, following “Fa the Little Whale”, “Whose Child Are You?”, and “A Penguin in My Fridge”, along with her participation in the collective work “Small and Easter Stories”.

Published by The Book Project, this 32-page paperback (22 × 22 cm) serves as a gentle introduction to Santorini for children and a unique keepsake of the island for older readers.
