The home of our live webcam is steeped in history and heritage

Choosing the right location for our new camera required finding a place that truly embodies the spirit of Santorini. Nestled at the highest point of the caldera cliffside in Imerovigli, Altana Heritage Suites is a masterpiece of Cycladic tradition.

Housed in a meticulously restored 17th-century historic building, Altana is a living testament to the island’s architectural heritage. Originally a historic cave-dwelling complex, it blends timeless authenticity with understated luxury. By placing our camera here, we aren’t just showing you a view; we are anchoring our lens within the very history, soul, and culture of Santorini.

This location enjoys a panoramic view of the world-famous volcanic caldera, including views of the Fira and Firostefani cliffside, the Nea Kammeni (volcano), Imerovigli’s blue dome church and many surroundings. From this vantage point, viewers can enjoy a sweeping, uninterrupted perspective that captures the dramatic scale of the cliffs.

A second camera is soon to be introduced doubling the experience and showing the volcanic islands, and those legendary, unedited Santorini sunsets.

A live webcam with history

For over a generation, a single digital window has connected millions of wanderlust-filled hearts to the dramatic cliffs, white-washed architecture, and deep blue depths of Greece’s most famous island. The legendary live camera hosted by Heliotopos in Imerovigli has served as a daily digital sanctuary. It has been a place where future travelers plan their dream vacations, expats cure their nostalgia, and romantic souls watch the sun sink into the Aegean Sea in real time.

In 2001, we introduced live photo snapshots captured by our web camera on the stunning caldera cliff of Santorini. Our camera, located at the Heliotopos Hotel in Imerovigli village, has been faithfully uploading a photo every minute, 24/7. We’re thrilled to have had the distinction of being the first webcam to operate live from Santorini.

As of February 2022, we upgraded our webcam to provide real-time video streaming of the magnificent caldera view, complete with 24-hour time-lapse videos available on the left side of the video window.

Our webcam faced West and Northwest, offering a sweeping panorama of the cliff, the sea below, the village of Oia, and the island of Thirassia across the bay. Our camera’s location provided an unobstructed view of the world-famous Santorini sunset, a magnificent backdrop for the awe-inspiring scenery.
