Santorini’s viticulture joins the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory

The special way of cultivating the vineyards and the wine-making tradition of Santorini, were recently inscribed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece. This is due to the indisputable fact that the viticulture and wine-making tradition was and still is at the heart of Santorini’s cultural identity. Its vineyard, which is the most natural element of its landscape, is unique in the world, self-rooted as it was never affected by the phylloxera, hosting many Indigenous grape varieties. The way of pruning, being the only one of its kind, the soil, the distinctive microclimate and the many years of experience of the vine growers contribute to the production of exceptional quality wines. Next step; the inscription on the UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
