The First Vinsanto from Mikra Thira Winery has arrived

Mikra Thira Winery, based on the island of Thirasia, has just released its very first dessert wine; a creation shaped by slow evolution and patience. The new Vinsanto Mikra Thira – 8 Years Old reveals the most concentrated and radiant expression of Santorini: the energy of its volcano, the strength of the Aegean, and the heritage of a land known for wines of longevity and character.
Vinsanto is a living treasure of Santorini’s wine tradition. For centuries it travelled as far as Russia and across the Mediterranean, earning a reputation for its exceptional quality and distinctive profile. Since the 18th century, it remains one of Greece’s most iconic sweet wines. It is made from sun-dried grapes, a method that gives the wine remarkable concentration and impressive ageing potential.
To craft Vinsanto Mikra Thira – PDO Santorini, Mikra Thira used old, ungrafted vines of Assyrtiko (95%) and Aidani (5%), grown in Santorini’s volcanic soils of pumice, ash, and silicate rocks. The grapes were naturally sun-dried for 7-10 days to intensify their aromas and flavours, followed by a slow fermentation. The wine then matured for eight years in 225 litre French oak barrels.
The result is a wine with a deep amber colour and stunning complexity. The nose unfolds gradually with aromas of sweet spices, ripe and dried fruits, honey, and caramel. On the palate it is velvety, rich, and harmonious, with Assyrtiko’s signature acidity balancing the natural sweetness of this dessert wine. The finish is long and silky, with lingering notes of nuts, honey, and spices.
“The Vinsanto Mikra Thira is our own interpretation of a historic wine style, crafted with respect for Santorini’s tradition and with the aim of a pure, contemporary, and refined expression of the island,” the Mikra Thira team notes.
Due to its extremely limited production (only 1,000 bottles!) the wine is available exclusively in Thirasia and Santorini.
