Mikra Thira Releases Its First Red Wine: A Rare Mandilaria from Thirassia

Mandilaria red wine bottle with glass and grapes

Mikra Thira winery, based on Thirassia, has officially introduced its very first red vinification. This highly anticipated addition to their collection brings a remarkably rare and dynamic character to the local wine scene.

Crafted as a single-variety Mandilaria, this ultra-limited release consists of just 527 bottles, revealing an unexpectedly elegant and refined side of the Santorini volcanic terroir.

The Art of Crafting a Premium Red

To bring this inaugural red wine to life, the winemaking team at Mikra Thira followed a meticulous process designed to tame and highlight the inherent finesse of the Mandilaria grape.

Following a controlled fermentation, the production was split equally (50/50) for a six-month aging period prior to bottling. 50% remained in Stainless Steel Tanks to preserve the vibrant purity, freshness, and bright fruit characteristics of the grape. The remaining 50% aged in third-use in French Oak Barrels on its fine lees. Regular stirring (bâtonnage) during these six months endowed the wine with a beautiful body and an exceptionally rich, creamy texture.

Tasting Notes & Aging Potential

The result is a distinctive expression of Mandilaria that seamlessly balances power with elegance.

  • Appearance: A brilliant, deep ruby color in the glass.

  • Aroma: The nose is dominated by clean, vibrant aromas of wild cherry and blackcurrant.

  • Palate: On the palate, the traditionally intense and rustic tannins of the Mandilaria variety emerge remarkably velvety and rounded. They stand in absolute harmony with the crisp acidity and the signature volcanic minerality of the island’s soil.

  • Aging Potential: This is a premium red wine with excellent structure and great evolution potential, built to age beautifully in the bottle for 6 to 8 years.

Perfect Food Pairings

To fully appreciate its complex profile, this Mandilaria is best served at 16°C–18°C. It pairs exceptionally well with:

  • Juicy grilled red meats and steaks.

  • Slow-roasted lamb with herbs.

  • Aged yellow cheeses (like traditional Greek graviera).

  • Classic Mediterranean dishes featuring rich tomato sauces, grilled vegetables, and fresh herbs.
