On Sunday, May 17, the island’s iconic volcanic landscape played host to a different kind of spectacle: a parade of impeccably dressed gentlefolk on stunning vintage motorcycles.

For the ninth consecutive year, Santorini proudly hosted its chapter of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR), a global movement that swaps traditional biker leather for tweed suits, silk ties, and open-face helmets, all in the name of men’s health.

Style with a Purpose: Racing Against Prostate Cancer

This wasn’t a scenic cruise. A dapper convoy of 37 classic motorcycles, carrying 41 smartly dressed riders and passengers, took to the winding roads of the Aegean island. Their mission? To drive awareness and raise vital funds for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health initiatives through the Movember organization.

By the end of the day, the tight-knit Santorini community raised €1,015, every cent of which goes directly to global charitable causes.

Did you know? The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride started in Australia in 2012. Today, it’s a global phenomenon taking place simultaneously across more than 1,000 cities in 109 countries. Santorini first joined the global map in 2016.

The Route: From Volcanic Highways to Craft Breweries

Supported by the Hellenic Police, the roaring convoy kicked off at the Ftelos Brewery in Karterados. The route was a postcard-perfect tour of the island, winding through the traditional village of Pyrgos, the black-sand coastline of Kamari, and the bustling capital of Fira, before looping back to the brewery.

The Santorini DGR Route Highlights:

  • Start/Finish: Ftelos Brewery, Karterados

  • Key Checkpoints: Pyrgos > Kamari > Fira

  • The Fleet: 37 vintage and classic motorcycles

Breaking the Silence on Men’s Health

Beyond the gleam of polished chrome, the event hosted vital conversations. Renowned urologist Andreas Vlachos took the stage to educate attendees on the prevention and early detection of prostate cancer. Following him, advocate Simos Vogiatzis delivered a poignant speech on breaking the stigma surrounding men’s mental health.

To wrap up the day, custom-made marble trophies crafted by local artist Christos Galaios were awarded to key community figures:

  • Manolis Chloridis: For generously hosting the event at Ftelos Brewery over the years.

  • Dr. Andreas Vlachos: For his unwavering medical advocacy and support.

  • Simos Vogiatzis: Recognized as the rider with the single largest contribution to this year’s fundraising efforts.

A Nationwide Greek Movement

While Santorini offers arguably the most dramatic backdrop, it wasn’t alone. The island was one of 15 Greek cities participating in the synchronized global event this year, joining the ranks of Athens, Thessaloniki, Corfu, and Heraklion.

Whether you are a local, an expat, or a traveler lucky enough to be visiting Greece in May, the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride proves that the spirit of philanthropy looks good on everyone, especially with a Santorini cliffside in the background.
