Vedema Festival: Santorini’s Sacred Grape Harvest Tradition

The annual Vedema Festival (Giorti tis Vedemas), organized by the Union of Santorini Cooperatives (Santo Wines), marks the official launch of the island’s annual grape harvest. Rooted deep in Theran agricultural history, the event brings together locals and visitors to honor the centuries-old viticultural practices that define Santorini’s volcanic winemaking.

What is “Vedema”?

The word Vedema derives from the Venetian vendemmia (meaning “grape harvest”). Historically, this period was the most vital economic and social highlight of the year on the island. Entire families would gather in the vineyards from dawn to hand-pick Assyrtiko, Athiri, and Aidani grapes, transporting them by donkey in woven baskets (kanastra) to the traditional cave-like wineries (kanaves).

Hosted at the Santo Wines Winery perched along the cliffside in Pyrgos, the festival offers an authentic look into local island heritage without artificial fanfare.

• Opening Remarks: Official greetings followed by an address from the Board President of the Union of Santorini Cooperatives, Markos Kafouros, highlighting the current state and preservation of Theran viticulture.

• Honorary Awards: Recognition of local figures and vineyard workers who continue to preserve the island’s unique agricultural ecosystem.

• Harvest Reenactment: A step-by-step re-creation of the traditional grape harvest accompanied by authentic folk songs of the Vedema.

• Grape Treading (Patitiri): Children participating in the classic foot-crushing of grapes in a traditional stone press, demonstrating how wine was historically extracted.

• Cultural Performances: Theatrical sketches portraying traditional daily life in 19th and early 20th century Santorini, alongside folk dances performed by local cultural associations.

• Authentic Glenti: Live traditional music performed by local musicians, accompanying open dancing.

Throughout the evening, complimentary traditional Santorinian appetizers and wine from Santo Wines are offered to all attendees.
