Visiting Santorini in May | Mythology, Tips & Weather

Santorini caldera with white buildings and blue sea

The island is waking up, the sun is getting bolder, and the scent of jasmine is beginning to drift through the cobbled alleys of Oia and Fira. May has officially arrived, and on Santorini, this month feels like a beautiful, deep breath before the vibrant energy of summer truly takes flight.

If you are visiting us this month, you’ve picked the “sweet spot” of the Aegean calendar. It is the month where we welcome back old friends and meet new ones, sharing the flavors of our caper, fava, tomato products, and crisp Assyrtiko wine.

A Mythological Beginning

As big fans of Greek Mythology, we are very excited to share with you the origin of the name of the month of May!

The month of May, a month celebrating spring and the summer ahead, a month of rebirth, nurture, and flowers, takes its name from Maia. In Greek mythology, Maia was the eldest of the seven nymphs of the Pleiades and the daughter of Atlas, the Titan god doomed to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. She was also the mother of Hermes, the messenger of the gods.

Maia was an Earth goddess, a nurturer, a mother, a nurse, and the grandmother of magic. She was also a midwife. In fact, “Maia” still means midwife in Greek, bringing new life into the world. Just as her name suggests, May acts as a midwife for the Aegean summer, ushering in the bright colors and warmth we’ve all been waiting for.

What May Means for Santorini

Here is why May is one of the most magical times to experience our volcanic home:

For us locals, May is the month of opening doors. The final coats of white paint are drying on the terraces, the boats are returning to the caldera, and there is a palpable sense of excitement in the air.

Perfect Temperatures: Most days are warm enough for a dip in the pool, but the evenings remain crisp, perfect for a sunset dinner. Make sure you get a warm top though because as soon as the sun is down the temperature drops significantly on the caldera.

A Landscape in Color: Before the high-summer sun turns the terrain into its iconic rugged gold, May sees the island covered in wildflowers. It is the best time for hikers to tackle the trail from Fira to Oia, or one of the other 20+ trails of Santorini!

The Luxury of Space: You can still find a quiet corner in a winery, free sunbeds in a black sanded beach, or a front-row seat for the sunset without the mid-August crowds.

Local Tip: Don’t forget to pack a warm jacket for the evenings! The Aegean breeze likes to remind us that summer is still just an invitation away.

Kalomina! (Happy Month!) We can’t wait to see you on the cliffs.
