The Santorini Volcano is “erupting” on September 15th, 2018

One more year has already passed and a new, spectacular show is in the making! It’s been decades since this yearly tradition began, when Santorini island remembers the eruptions that contributed to what it is today. The “Ifestia Festival” (or “Volcanoes Festival”) will be held during the third weekend of September, with cultural events and concerts leading up to the main event of the festival.

On the night of the 15th of September, 2018, colourful fireworks will brighten the Santorini night sky, making the volcano “erupt” in a simulation of the real volcanic eruption that formed Santorini. With slight variations, every year the show makes a night to remember. It will start at about 20:30, usually with small fires resembling the melting lava flowing on the volcanic islands (Palaia and Nea Kameni). This is followed by fireworks exploding in the sky, getting bigger and bigger as the show progresses. The entire rim of the caldera of Santorini will be able to watch, with Fira and Imerovigli being the closest points of view.
