Santorini had a strong presence at the Volcanic Wine Awards 2026, with the island’s wines standing out in a new but emerging international competition that focuses exclusively on wines from volcanic regions, highlighting the importance of terroir and special growing conditions.
What is the Volcanic Wine Awards Competition?
The competition is organized by the Volcanic Wines International network in collaboration with the JancisRobinson.com platform, one of the most trusted international sources for wine.
The Volcanic Wines International network was founded in 2019 on the initiative of producers and organizations from volcanic wine-producing regions, with the aim of promoting and highlighting the uniqueness of volcanic wines worldwide. The network’s inspirer and driving force is Canadian Master Sommelier John Szabo. Countries with significant viticultural areas in volcanic soils participate in this, namely: Armenia, Chile, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Spain, Portugal, USA, Hungary.
In its second year, this year’s competition was held last February in New York with the participation of 260 wines from volcanic soils worldwide. The evaluation was carried out by specialized tasters over the course of three days and after the samples were grouped by region or country, with a maximum number of 40 wines per session. During the tasting, only the origin, year and varieties of each wine were revealed. The wines were rated on a scale of 100 points, with the threshold for distinction at 86 points and categories from honorable mention to gold medal.
The results are gradually revealed by region and in a short time the gold medals will be re-evaluated by the presidents of the judging committees, in order to distinguish those that will receive an additional special distinction. Many of the distinguished wines will be exhibited during the 5th international conference of Volcanic Wines, which will be held in June in New York.
